Heimatdesign - Dortmund
Heimatdesign
„So, they are having a wine festival here now – in Dortmund, we are drinking beer!“ This is what Reinhild Kuhn, manager of Heimatdesign, overheard a man say some years ago, and what sums up the local situation pretty well, then and today. Dortmund, the city of football and beer. But Dortmund is so much more. In Dortmund, something is constantly on the move. And may be this is what makes it unique – the many small changes which cause a vibrancy and continuously reveal new things. This is why she and Marc Röbbecke have for long shed a joint spotlight on the local and regional design scene. In this context, the Heimatdesign magazine has been an important communication medium to promote exciting subjects from the fields of design and culture within the region and beyond. Starting with the 14th edition the chief editor has been Jan Kempinski. Diverse formats and coworking space have been realized and filled with life. Independent of any specific project, Heimatdesign is always working towards giving a stage to the actors from the creative sector to keep them in the region or even to induce their return. So maybe, one day, even Dortmund will stand for more than “just” football and beer.

Kraut & Rüben
Unplastered brick walls, bare light bulbs and an old barn door: Kraut & Rüben combines farm with industrial charm. The focus of the food on offer: salad. For the basis of the salad mix, which can be enriched with farfalle pasta at will, four ingredients can be selected. Olives, chick peas, red lentils or strawberries? Kraut & Rüben focuses on variety and seasonal supply. This also applies for the soups, materialising, depending on the season, as light vegetable soups or hearty stews, as well as for the different variations of oven potatoes. Always on the menu: homemade vanilla or chocolate pudding and rice pudding.

Neues Schwarz
"Coffee used to be a means to an end for me," says Benedikt Heitmann "until I tasted coffee from a blond roasting. That's when it made a click!" With his brother Johannes Heitmann, he runs "Neues Schwarz", a small roastery and coffee bar. At least once a week, a roast is made on their own machine. The brothers see themselves as part of the third-wave movement and they swear by small quantities of beans of selected quality. The bar serves espresso, filter coffee, cappuccino, tea and cake. Aimed at avid coffee lovers are the regular "Cuppings", i.e. coffee tastings.

Sissikingkong
In Dortmund, Sissikingkong has long been an established institution. The mixture of bar, restaurant and event location has already been running since 2000. The interior is straightforward and unpretentious with retro touches, the menu is clear and also includes vegetarian dishes. All the more extensive is the events programme, which includes concerts, DJ sets, drink specials such as "Shaken, not stirred - favourite drinks from cinema & TV", magic shows, poetry slams and the so called "Ekamina"-lectures. The latter evenings around the electric fireplace have reached cult status.

Tyde Studios
In 2015, the team around Chris Gutbier opened Tyde Studios down by the Dortmunder harbour. Inside there are cozy grandma sofas, outside, directly at the harbour quay, a beach. On the menu are exclusively vegan dishes such as "Raw Lasagne" or the "Tydeburger" made out of chick peas or kidney beans. Smoothies are served with the food. Sounds healthy? That would fit, because on Mondays, yoga is taught at Tyde Studios and in the warmer months, running and bike events in the form of "Tyde Run" and "Tyde Ride" are held regularly. Oh yes: concerts, parties and dance classes are also on the agenda.

Unterhaltung
With its diversity of options, the Kreuzviertel is something like the Prenzlauer Berg of Dortmund. A multitude of cafes and restaurants form the cornerstones of the vital street culture, but there are also wine taverns, and the demand for sundry gifts is also well covered. Matthias Hülsebus and Nadine Mlottek have been running this shop since 2002 with an array of colourful accessories and self-proclaimed showpieces. The items range from books about football to children's toys and designer furniture and shoes. There is also a selection of delicious treats, from chocolates to cough drops and gin. No question about it, there’s something for everyone here.

Zum Schlips
A pub without frills. "Zum Schlips" is open two days a week and offers three drinks: water, St ßchen - freshly tapped beer - and Wacholder-tonic. The latter, Jan Möller sees as an ironic answer to the gin hype: after all, Wacholderbrand, the juniper-flavoured distilled beverage, is a variety of Gin. Beer and Wacholder-tonic can be ordered by the meter - at the push of a button located on the table. Möller and his team opened "Zum Schlips" in the former tasting room of the Krämer distillery in early 2016, gloriously restoring the 50s look of the place. Tip: book the likewise restored bowling alley!
