40 times co-working in NRW
2016 was the year of co-working in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). A lot of newly-found businesses prove, that the concept originating from the USA has not only settled in the metropolises of NRW, but also spread to the more rural areas. There, small but dedicated locations offer a superb working environment. In the bigger cities like Cologne, Düsseldorf or Dortmund, such spaces burgeon at every corner. The FactoryCampus in Düsseldorf shows off with bare size, the WorkInn in Dortmund opens its fourth branch office at the beginning of 2017 and thus becomes the space with the most branches in NRW. In Cologne, incubator and co-working space Startplatz expands its premises to the third floor and presents one of the most thorough offering one can expect from an innovative working environment. At the end of 2016, state-funded Digitale Wirtschaft NRW (DWNRW) hubs confer on the field of co-working. Co-working with child and co-working cafés top off the existing product range of a state once famous for coal and steel. It seems as if NRW finally arrived in the age of information. 40 modernly furnished spaces are available. We compiled them for you.
What are co-working spaces?
What once was the shared office could well be a co-working space today. A workplace for a few hours, days or months is no problem. Especially for creative workers, the flexible assortment of infrastructure and social environment is sought for to acquire new clients more quickly. The motto is: sharing is caring.
Seldom, spaces can finance themselves through co-working alone, hence they offer team offices, conference rooms, event spaces, workshops, child care or cafés. Not without benefits for the residents.
Co-working spaces are locations for communities. Thereby, they act as small, mostly private, educational initiative. Exchanging knowledge and experience is the most valuable aspect of an integrative space. When choosing, one should have a closer look at the thematic focuses of the spaces: Do I need a start-up environment or a quiet and creative workplace? Do I want to immerse into the sustainability scene or do I want to exchange with designers? In NRW, particularly in Cologne, there are spaces for every demand and budget.
Digitale Wirtschaft NRW Hubs
At precisely the right time, the initiative of the state NRW starts here: the DWNRW hubs. As part of a comprehensive catalogue of measures for the subsidy of digitalisation, the six hubs in Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen, Münster and the Ruhr area each have €3 million at their disposal, on condition that their concepts include a free-of-charge co-working offer. Established at the end of 2016, these hubs still organise themselves, launch websites, set up social media accounts and still look for employees. But come 2017, the start-up co-working scene in NRW can look forward to six new offerings.
