Anja Eder - Wuppertal

Limpalux / Anja Eder und Michael Römer

Life between Grey and Green

Slats of paper form an organic-seeming Lightsource. Depending on daylight and airstreams, the lamps by Limpalux change their shape and colour, turning a luminary into a swinging sculpture. Functionality meets design. Initially planned as an art object, the idea for the unusual lamps made of even more unusual material lay dormant for ten years until Anja Eder founded Limpalux together with Michael Römer in 2009. Art was transformed into light and vice-versa. Although Anja was born in Solingen, they both live and work in Wuppertal today. Their offices find themselves next to the water with a view of the suspension railway of Wuppertal. Right in the middle of architectural sins and gems. “Embedded into the green, Wuppertal is always open for new and improvised things between the lines – the locations are available.”. Not a thing the town is famous of, what could be explained by the fact that the “residents of Wuppertal are too modest”, as said by mayor Andreas Mucke. None to be disturbed by, both designer actually welcome this: “not everyone has to be told how nice it is here. We leave that to other cities”.

Anita Karthaus

When confronted with Anita Karthaus' imaginative creations, no one can doubt that fashion is indeed art. With light, partially transparent materials and feminine, draped shapes, she has made it onto the international fashion platform. Her pieces can be purchased in shops worldwide and, according to her website, she is even presented in high-gloss magazines suchas VOGUE and ELLE. "The point of fashion is to encourage dreams." This quote from Anita Karthaus is reflected in her collections; because of their imaginative design, they remind you of dreamy film costumes. Fashion can simply be clothing or -in Anita Karthaus' case – it can underline the individuality and beauty of the wearer, and ultimately possibly even turn her into a work of art.

Frau Wunder

Shopping in one afternoon with the entire family without having to go into various shops? It's possible: at Jennifer Isenberg's business "Frau Wunder" in the Luisenquarter. She herself describes it as a generational shopping centre, where one can find sustainable children's and adult's clothing, jewellery, crockery and other wonderful things. Fairly produced fashion is not considered a hip trend here, but a mindset, which Jennifer has been carrying out for over ten years now with her "Frau Wunder". In children's fashion, according to her own statement, she has already achieved her goal: here, one hundred per cent is ecological; in the adult segment, already 80 percent is. Her goods come from European small labels whose retro style is reminiscent of Swedish or Danish prints and gives dad, mum, child and grandma alike, a feeling of wellbeing and cosiness.

oelberger taschenmanufaktur

With her bags made of recycled materials, Silvia Werner proves that sustainability and design are not contradictory. The founder of the Oelberger Taschenmanufaktur uses firefighting helmets, advertisement banners, safety belts and probably the most unusual: floor carpets from dance theatres, which are cleaned with biodegradable detergents. As a result, the stories of these materials continue to live on and the traces of use make eachobject a handmade unique specimen. The fact that the letters "oe" are highlighted in red in the brand name, emphasises how important attributes are to Silvia: open and honest, ecological and official individual pieces.Available in all possible shapes, sizes and colours that bring joy into the daily life of their new owners.

Sommerloch

It is rumoured that this is the place to be in Wuppertal, as Sommerloch, with its mentality and events, brings a bit of Berlin flair to the Pott. Between the old industrial red brick walls and high windows, Sommerloch offers great alcohol and entertainment, ranging from theatre plays to concerts to literary events. Summer or winter; At any time of the year you can have an excellent time at this place of culture. "We are always open when there is half a reason." Even without a reason, you can still enjoy Sommerloch; by listening to their Radio Reude on Saturdays for example, possibly somewhat hungover from the previous evening. Should the Sunday get-together at Grandma's be cancelled, you can meet again in Sommerloch the next day – for coffee and cake.
